Reciprocity

The skill-based economy.

A 20-year philosophy about technology, trust, and economic opportunity, distilled into one platform concept.

Everyone has value. Let's exchange it.

Reciprocity deck, 2025
An isometric community marketplace where people trade skills, value flowing between them as shared currency
The breadth of exchange
A businessperson and a gardener shake hands over a shared coin, trading professional skills
A professional and a farmer shake hands, exchanging skills for skills
An educator and a tradesperson shake hands, trading teaching for repair work

The challenge

Skill goes under-leveraged.

Traditional economies leave skills and experience under-leveraged. Reciprocity reimagines value exchange beyond monetary systems.

64%of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, including nearly half of six-figure earners.
67%of U.S. adults have a side hustle, yet struggle to maximize returns when buyers are cash-strapped.
44%of workers globally feel underutilized in their current roles.
Millionsare excluded by cash-based marketplaces — valuable skills, no disposable income.
Where it comes from

Twenty years in the making.

Technology should strengthen human connection and create economic opportunity, not extract from it.

The seed took root during my time at eBay, watching people create value through peer-to-peer exchange. Over the next twenty years — building platforms at the intersection of content, community, and commerce at Yahoo!, Condé Nast, and Atlassian, and coaching female-led early-stage startups — the concept evolved as I learned more about trust dynamics, marketplace mechanics, and what makes communities thrive.

Reciprocity is the distillation of that experience: a platform where skills become currency, where economic mobility doesn't require financial capital. The specific implementation has changed dozens of times. The philosophy guiding it hasn't.

The vision

A new skill-based economy.

A digital platform to barter skills, build trust, and create opportunity beyond monetary systems.

Skills as currency

Your carpentry can be exchanged for web development — no cash required.

Pooled skill, not pooled money

Community projects happen through what people can do, not what they can pay.

AI keeps it fair

Fair value exchange without forcing artificial one-to-one trades.

Trust as the foundation

Reputation built through behavior, not just reviews.

Economic mobility doesn't require financial capital.

Why now

What AI finally makes possible.

Earlier skill-exchange attempts failed on barriers that AI now solves.

Intelligent mapping

Connects complementary skills automatically, solving the liquidity problem that stalled every prior attempt.

Dynamic valuation

Adjusts skill worth to real-time supply and demand, removing pricing disputes.

Automated trust

Builds reputation and safety through behavioral analysis, enabling trust at scale.

Smart verification

Handles dispute resolution and exchange confirmation without manual overhead.

What this demonstrates

How I think about product.

Many people exchanging skills, ideas, and work around a shared center of value
01

Community-powered platform strategy — two decades building trust-based ecosystems at scale.

02

Trust-based ecosystem design — from eBay's peer-to-peer marketplace to Atlassian's 78M-user community.

03

Values-driven product innovation — technology that strengthens human connection rather than extracting from it.

04

Problems worth solving at scale — economic mobility through skill, not cash.

Explored across a domain portfolio — reciprocity.exchange, getreciprocity.com, skill-economy.com, exchangeskills.io, trustbasedeconomy.com — each a different lens on the same philosophy.
